Enterprise Strategy Leadership Tools and Reporting Made Easy

While there is still a need for functional and network leadership, enterprise leadership is helping organizations become more strategic, creating more value and sustainability.  As the business world changes, so too must executives in their view of the organization they lead. It’s about leading other leaders to have the same helicopter view they have.  As with any other strategy, tracking metrics is imperative, so the endgame here is to look at enterprise leadership reporting made easy.

Functional vs. Network vs. Enterprise Leadership

Functional leadership focuses on the performance of an individual team, unit, or department.  It’s like standing in front of a forest but looking at each individual tree.  This is completely necessary for accomplishing day-to-day tasks.

Network leadership, also necessary, recognizes the performance of other teams, units, or departments that work in conjunction with their team, but is still separate with different functions.  It’s like standing in front of a forest and seeing individual groups of trees that happen to be part of the same forest.

Enterprise leadership focuses on all teams, units, or departments as a whole, operating separately but together.  It acts on behalf of the organization, not just one or a few functions of the organization.  It’s like being in an airplane and viewing the forest from above.  You see the whole forest and everything in it.  You see things you wouldn’t see standing on the ground looking into the forest.  We all know the saying about not seeing the forest for the trees.

                Transitioning to enterprise leadership

Enterprise leadership was once thought to be for the top executives only, but more organizations are looking for leaders at all levels to take on this role in an effort to improve the overall organizational performance. Top executives must look for the leadership qualities that will transition a leader from the functional to the strategist. This transition will occur naturally for some but for others, it may take more molding. One thing is for sure, these leaders all need the proper training, coaching, and tools for success.  Read up on how to get the most out of your team with strategy framework and tools for project leadership.

                Becoming an enterprise leader

The old adage of change starting with you is true. You must first be an enterprise leader before you can groom or expect others to be one. Here are some tips to help you achieve this on a personal level:

      1. Learn about the other processes of the organization outside of your own expertise.
      2. Learn how the processes of your team affect other departments and the organization as a whole.
      3. Have the mindset of asking how your team processes can improve the organization instead of how to improve just your team processes.
      4. Ask questions to gain a better understanding and look at the answers from the organizational view.

How to achieve success with collaboration

To be able to have the bird's eye view needed for enterprise leadership, a leader must have access to communication and progress from the entire organization.  This will help the leader determine areas that are strong and those areas where improvement is needed.  It can also help the leader determine if resources need to be shifted or to plan for future adjustments.

It takes the proper tools to ensure your organization is collaborating at peak performance and providing all the data you need to create precise reporting.  Some points to consider when looking for the right tool include:

      1. Want to gain an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the organization.
      2. Want to collect feedback from your customers.
      3. Assist leaders with more efficient use of their time.
      4. Help leaders make better decisions by being more strategic.
      5. Help others communicate and collaborate more effectively.
      6. Assist leaders in shifting teams to a more network approach when performing tasks.
      7. Keep an eye on the pulse of the organization.  What’s working and what’s not.

Enterprise leadership reporting is made easy when you have a platform that allows you to collaborate, share, communicate, and access cross-team workflow all in one place.  This platform should align with your entire organization and give you the data you need to properly track and report what you need to make those critical decisions in a more strategic manner.
